Vijayapura: Vijayapura police opened fire and secured an accused involved in supplying a country-made pistol used in a recent murder case. The firing incident took place near Women’s University on the city outskirts when the accused allegedly attacked the police while resisting arrest.

The police had launched an operation to apprehend Suresh Rathod, who had allegedly provided the weapon used in the January 28 murder of Satish Rathod in Tikota taluk.

While the police had arrested five accused in the case, Suresh was absconding since the day of the crime.

Acting on a tip-off, on Thursday police tracked him down and when police confronted him, he attacked the police team.

“When our officers tried to arrest him, he attacked PSI Vinod Dodmani and a constable with a knife. In response, our officer shot a warning shot in the air and then in the leg. He is receiving medical treatment,” SP Laxman Nimbargi told reporters.

PSI Dodmani and the constable who sustained injuries were also admitted to a private hospital.

Superintendent of Police Laxman Nimbargi, Additional SP Ramanagouda Hatti, and other senior officers visited the hospital to check on their condition.
