Karnataka: Recliners numbers set to rise to 15 in ensuing Budget session

Earlier, a recliner was installed by Speaker U.T. Khader in July, 2024 Legislative session in the lobby of the Legislative Assembly

BENGALURU: A total of 15 recliners will be added from a lone recliner earlier in the Legislative Assembly lobby to allow legislators to have forty winks post-lunch session in the ensuing State Budget session starting in Vidhana Soudha of Bengaluru from March 3.

Earlier, a recliner was installed by Speaker U.T. Khader in July, 2024 Legislative session in the lobby of the Legislative Assembly.

The move to include recliners in the Legislative Assembly session is to ensure the legislators do not skip the post-lunch session citing various reasons. The 15 recliners will be available on rental basis and the rise in number of recliners is owing to demand especially by some senior legislators to U.T. Khader.

During the sessions, some MLAs were caught on cameras slipping to sleep when the session was on. It was a common sight to see empty chairs in the Legislative Assembly post-lunch session and now recliners will help tired legislators for a short nap and get back to the session.

Legislators demanded Khader to install recliners and the numbers will go up this time. Legislators brought to the notice of the Legislative Assembly Speaker “Going out for lunch post-lunch made it difficult for them to return top Session on time and many skipped the Session since they attend the Session from morning and it took them a while to move out of Vidhana Soudha and return back to the session.

Besides, legislators felt the need for recliners to have a nap since it will be tiresome for them to sit and focus on the happenings since morning. The Speaker obliged to the legislators demand and increased the recliners to 15 this time.

Khader said “It will be a waste of time to purchase recliners since they will not be of use once the session is over.” After the session, recliners will be removed from the lobby of the Legislative Assembly.
