Karnataka: Shivakumar Hails Sandur By-Election Win as 2028 Prelude

Ballari: Deputy Chief Minister and KPCC president DK Shivakumar has hailed the recent by-election victory as a prelude to the 2028 Assembly elections.

“By electing Annapurna, the people have scripted a prelude to the 2028 Assembly elections,” Shivakumar said on Sunday at a thanksgiving event celebrating Congress candidate Annapoorna Tukaram’s win in the recent Sandur by-election.
Expressing gratitude to the people of Sandur, Shivakumar said, “This program has been organized to thank the people of Sandur for energizing the Congress party and delivering a strong message across the state. We are committed to repaying your trust and support.”
“When I predicted 136 seats in the last Assembly elections, many laughed. Even during the by-election campaign, I asserted that our strength would increase to 138. With Annapurna’s victory, we have reached that number,” he said.
Shivakumar further stated that if MP Prakash’s daughter (Latha Mallikarjun) and Gauribidanur MLA Puttaswamy Gowda, who won as rebel candidates are included then the Congress’s tally would rise to 140. He also mentioned about 'BJP friends.'

“Media speculated that each of the three major parties would win one seat. I boldly declared that Congress would win all three. People have placed their faith in our guarantees – be it free power up to 200 units, Rs 2,000 support for women, free bus travel, Anna Bhagya, or unemployment allowances,” he said.

He emphasized Congress’s inclusivity in governance, stating, “Congress’s strength is the nation’s strength. Its history is the nation’s history. When Congress is in power, all communities share in governance.”

Acknowledging BJP’s caste politics in Sandur, Shivakumar also pointed out historic challenges in regions like Shiggaon and Channapatna, the strongholds of Basavaraj Bommai and Kumaraswamy, respectively.
“Despite their campaigns, people in these constituencies have chosen Congress for its welfare guarantees over individual candidates,” Shivakumar observed.
