Lithium Ion Batteries Production To Begin Near Bengaluru in 9 months
Bengaluru: A globally renowned Lithium-ion batteries manufacturer, International Battery Company (IBC) is all set to begin production at its IBC Giga Factory unit in Devanahalli Industrial Area in Bengaluru Rural district in about 9 months with an investment of Rs 390 crore for its first phase.
Initially, the cells will be used to produce battery packs designed for small mobility solutions including two-wheelers and three-wheelers and in coming days, the IBC unit plans to expand its focus to larger mobility applications. A Memorandum of Agreement (MoU) was signed between IBC and the State Government in August, 2023 for Rs 8,000 crore to establish a recyclable Lithium-ion battery plant.
The ground breaking ceremony to set-up the state-of-the-art Unit was performed by Minister of Large and Medium Scale Industries MB Patil on Wednesday. The State Government allocated 10 acres in the KIADB plot in the Information Technology Investment Region.
Currently, IBC produces lithium-ion cells at its facility spread across 35,000 square foot in South Korea and the cells are ferried to India to make the finished product, said the Minister at the ground breaking ceremony.
The lithium-ion batteries unit in Bengaluru rural district is expected to create 300 direct employment opportunities, said the Minister and stated the lithium-ion batteries unit here aims to export 20 percent of its production to United States and European Union markets to highlight Karnataka’s high-quality manufacturing capabilities at the global level.
The Minister said “IBC’s focus on lithium-ion battery production is critical to India’s transition to renewable energy” and stated the IBC Giga Unit as a landmark project in the green energy and advanced battery manufacturing sectors.
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Industries Department Commissioner Gunjan Krishna, IBC Chief Executive Officer Priyadarshi Panda among others.
