UDUPI: Karkala Town police have arrested a man for allegedly posting caste-based derogatory remarks against Karnataka home minister Priyank Kharge on Facebook.
The accused, identified as Sudhir Bangera, a resident of Kervashe village in Karkala taluk, was arrested following a complaint lodged by Suresh of Nitte.
According to the complaint, the complainant came across a post on a Facebook page titled “Namma Karla” on Saturday while browsing the platform. The post featured a photograph of the minister and stated, “The RSS will not be able to indulge in communalism for the next two years because the person holding the home minister's post is not a soft-natured minister — it is Priyank Kharge.”
Police said the accused had posted a comment under the post on June 6. The complainant alleged that the comment contained caste-based derogatory remarks targeting the minister.
Police said the accused allegedly made the remarks with intent to create enmity, hatred and disturbance to social harmony. The complaint also alleged that the accused insulted the minister on the basis of caste and issued threats.
Based on the complaint, police registered a case under Sections 351(3), 196 and 353(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Sections 3(1)(r) and 3(1)(u) of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
The accused was arrested and produced before a court.
