Timely Action By Panambur Police Saves Distressed Farmer In Mangaluru

The family members who contacted him over phone and repeatedly requested him to return home: Reports

MANGALURU: Quick action by Panambur police helped rescue a farmer from Hassan district who was allegedly attempting to end his life by jumping into the Phalguni River near Kulur bridge in Mangaluru on Saturday late evening.

The farmer, a resident of a village near Shravanabelagola in Channarayapatna taluk, had left his house early in the morning without informing his family members. Police said he had been facing health-related and financial difficulties and was mentally disturbed.

The family members who contacted him over phone and repeatedly requested him to return home. However, he refused to disclose his location and allegedly indicated that he intended to end his life.

Later, relatives learnt that he was somewhere near Panambur beach and contacted Panambur Police Inspector Saleem Abbas through a retired police officer at around 5.30 pm, seeking immediate help.

Following this, the police launched a search operation and coordinated with the technical cell of the Police Commissioner’s office to trace the man through mobile phone inputs.

At the same time, police personnel continued speaking to him over phone and tried to counsel him and calm him down. However, he was adamant on his decision.

After searching for nearly one-and-a-half hours, the police team traced the farmer near Kuloor bridge at around 7 pm. According to police, he was preparing to jump into the river. The officers intervened and brought him to safety.

Though the spot where he was found falls under Kavoor police station limits, Panambur police continued the operation without delay and shifted him safely to the police station.

At the station, police provided him with food and water and counselled him, advising that suicide was not a solution to temporary problems. Later, he was handed over safely to his relatives who had arrived from Hassan district.

Senior police officers appreciated the efforts of the Panambur police personnel involved in the rescue operation.

Police sources said Panambur police had handled a similar rescue operation in November last year, when officers intervened and saved a man and his four-year-old daughter in another suicide-related incident.
