BJP’s Woman Candidate Caught Stealing Cash From Kerala Temple

The accused was identified as Prabhavathi, who had contested in civic body polls as a BJP candidate

Palakkad: A 42-year-old woman was arrested for allegedly breaking open a temple donation box and stealing cash from it in this district, police said on Wednesday. The accused was identified as Prabhavathi, a resident of Kanimangalam in Nenmara, who had contested in civic body polls as a BJP candidate.

According to police, the incident occurred on Friday night at the Mariamman Temple in Kanimangalam, where the donation box was allegedly broken open and around Rs 10,000 was stolen.

The theft came to light on Saturday when temple authorities and the priest arrived for routine rituals and found the donation box damaged. A complaint was subsequently lodged with the Nenmara police.

During the investigation, police examined CCTV footage collected from the temple premises and nearby areas. It allegedly showed a woman breaking open the donation box, following which the accused was identified and taken into custody.

Police said the woman was also an accused in a cheating case involving the pledging of imitation jewellery earlier.

She was later produced before a court, which remanded her to judicial custody, police added.

According to the police, the accused had contested as a BJP candidate in the 2020 local body elections in the 17th ward of Palakkad Nenmara Panchayath. In an earlier case, she is an accused, for cheating with rolled gold, the police added.
