Bodies, human remains recovered from Chaliyar river, Moved to Wayanad

According to the CM office, till date 58 bodies and 95 human remains have been retrieved from the Malappuram district, totaling 153. The recovered bodies include 32 men, 23 women, 2 boys, and one girl.

Thiruvananthapuram: As many as 143 bodies and human remains, recovered from different parts of the Chaliyar River in the Malappuram district, were transported to Wayanad.

The Kerala chief minister’s office said that the bodies including the dismembered parts flowed 20 km downstream from the landslide hit Mundakkai and Chooralmala areas. The bodies were floating in Chaliyar river in Malappuram district.

During an all-party meeting led by the Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in Wayanad on Thursday, it was suggested that for the ease of identification by relatives, the bodies should be moved to Wayanad. Consequently, an immediate decision was made to this effect.

On Thursday, a search operation took place at Edavanna Kadavu on the Chaliyar River to locate individuals missing from the Wayanad landslide.

The bodies were initially discovered in Pothukallu grama panchayat in Malappuram, nearest to Mundakkai and Chooralmala in Wayanad, where the landslides occurred.

Subsequently, more bodies were found, including those from Vazhakkad, located a few kilometres downstream. The inquest and post-mortem proceedings for all the bodies retrieved from the Chaliyar are taking place at Nilambur District Hospital.
