Monsoon gains strength in Kerala
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With the monsoon gaining strength in Kerala, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in several districts till June 22.
Orange alert has been sounded in Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasargod districts later this week. Some of these places are expected to receive extremely heavy rainfall ranging from 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm.
The IMD has also predicted rainfall accompanied by lightning in various districts. The revenue authorities have asked people residing in danger zones including coastal areas to remain cautious in the wake of the possibility of high tidal waves and rough seas.
The disaster management authority has advised people residing in these areas to be prepared for evacuation at short notice. Fisherfolk have been asked to keep their fishing gear in safe places.
Orange alert (heavy rainfall ranging from 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm) in the following districts;
June 21: Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur
June 22: Maappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, Kasargod.
Yellow alert (Heavy rainfall ranging from 64.55 mm to 115.5 mm expected in these districts)
June 18: Ernakulam, Kannur and Kasargod.
June 19: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Kozhikode , Kannur.
June 20: Kannur, Kasargod
June 21: Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Wayanad, Kasargod.
June 22: Pathanamthitta, Alappzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam , Thrissur, Palakkad , Wayanad.
Two killed in lightning strike:
Two MGNREGA workers were killed in Punalur in Kollam district after being struck by lightning. The dead were identified Sarojam and Rajani, natives of Edakunnam.
In a separate incident, a fisherman was injured after being struck by lightning at Cheppanam near Panangad in Ernakulam. The boat was destroyed by a lightning strike. The injured identified as Siby George, a native of Thoppumpady, has been admitted to a hospital.
