IMD Predicts Widespread Rainfall Across Kerala For The Next Five Days

Orange alert in Thiruvananthapuram, yellow in seven other districts: Reports

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The southwest monsoon has been delayed and is now expected to arrive in Kerala between June 2 and 4, a setback attributed to a cyclonic system over the Bay of Bengal that has disrupted the atmospheric conditions needed for its advance. Consequently, the IMD has revised its forecast, pushing back the monsoon’s usual onset date of June 1, which was earlier anticipated as May 26.

Meanwhile, heavy rains hit Kerala’s capital, Thiruvananthapuram, causing waterlogging in several parts of the city, even as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) sounded a yellow alert in seven districts predicting widespread rainfall across the state for the next five days.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Thiruvananthapuram, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm over the next 24 hours, accompanied by winds reaching up to 50 kmph.
A yellow alert has been declared for seven districts — Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Malappuram and Kozhikode — with widespread rainfall expected across the state over the next five days.
The IMD said yellow alerts will continue in several districts over the coming days. On May 31, alerts are in place for Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Kozhikode, Wayanad and Kannur.
On June 1, yellow alerts will extend to Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad.
On June 2, Ernakulam, Idukki, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod will remain under alert, while on June 3, warnings are in place for Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Kannur.
The IMD said these alerts indicate the likelihood of isolated heavy rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within 24 hours, along with possible thundershowers.
Officials have advised caution in vulnerable areas as rainfall activity is expected to remain widespread across Kerala during the period.
