Kerala CM Designate Calls For Changes In Travel Security

“I’ve asked the police to keep security minimal. If I travel with a big convoy and all the showy arrangements, people might not say anything out loud, but they’ll laugh at me on the inside": Chief Minister-designate V D Satheesan

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister-designate V.D. Satheesan has called for major changes to his travel security, opting for a sharp cut in the number of vehicles in his motorcade. He has instructed the police that only the pilot and escort vehicles are allowed, and top officials in charge of his security have been told not to inconvenience citizens or block roads during travel.

Although he wasn’t keen on having an escort at all, police personnel explained it was mandatory due to the safety protocols for highly protected VIPs.

“I’ve asked the police to keep security minimal. If I travel with a big convoy and all the showy arrangements, people might not say anything out loud, but they’ll laugh at me on the inside,” he told reporters here.

Satheeshan told the police to ensure the public isn’t inconvenienced during his travels. By requesting just a couple of vehicles in his motorcade, he stressed it’s not meant to mock his predecessors, who may have had their own needs for such arrangements. He felt it was important to send a message of austerity from the top. “If we apply these measures at our level, others will be encouraged to follow,” he added.
