Kerala law student murder case: High Court upholds death sentence
Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala High Court on Monday dismissed the appeal filed by Ameerul Islam, the convict in the murder case of a law student in Perumbavoor, challenging the death sentence awarded by a trial court.
A division bench of the high court upheld the death sentence awarded by the trial court. The division bench of the high court which pronounced the verdict at 2 pm on Monday, also rejected the accused's plea to be acquitted in the case.
The law student's mother and sister had come to the court to hear the court's verdict. Ameerul Islam, a native of Assam, was earlier charged with murder, rape, trespassing and causing grievous hurt.
In his appeal, the accused argued that he had not committed the crime and that the trial court considered against him the evidence fabricated by the police.
The law student was found murdered in a one-room shed at Kanal Purampokku in Perumbavoor's Kuruppampady at around 8 pm, on April 28, 2016
Soon after a special investigation team led by Perumbavoor DySP began the probe.
The postmortem report revealed the sexual assault attempt on the student and 38 injuries were found on her body.
Accused Ameerul Islam was arrested on June 14, 2016, from Tamil Nadu where he was working in a car workshop. The probe team filed the chargesheet on September 16, 2016.
Subsequently, the trial began at the Ernakulam Principal Sessions Court in March 2017 and the court awarded capital punishment to the accused on December 14, 2017.
