Heavy rains continue to lash Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram: A red alert has been sounded again in some districts of Kerala following heavy rains over the past 24 hours.

The possibility of heavy rainfall has been predicted by the Central Meteorological Department for Ernakulam and Thrissur districts. Palakkad, Wayanad, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Idukki, Kottayam, Alappuzha and Pathanamthitta districts are put on orange alert while yellow alert has been sounded for Kannur, Kasaragod, Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam districts.
Pathanamthitta, Kottayam and Idukki districts are on orange alert tomorrow. There is a possibility of high waves and sea erosion along the Kerala coast. The fishermen have been advised against going to sea until further notice. The possibility of heavy rainfall continues due to the influence of the cyclonic circulation over South Kerala.
Low pressure formed over the Southwest Bay of Bengal will intensify in the next few hours.
It is likely to develop into a severe low-pressure area. There may be a slight decrease in the intensity of rain in Kerala by tomorrow.
Heavy rains in the entire state
Heavy rains battered various parts of Kozhikode district. Mavoor, Perumanna Annassery region reported widespread agricultural crop damage in the rains.
Tengilakadal Ayamkulam road collapsed even as the water level rose in Chaliyar. People were evacuated to safer places from Perumanna where many houses were inundated following heavy rains.
The water level that had increased in low-lying areas due to flash floods the other day has started to recede. Rain water entered some of the wards at the mother and child care centre of Kozhikode Medical College Kozhikode on Wednesday night. The situation returned to normal on Thursday morning. According to medical college authorities, no patients were shifted out from the wards at the hospital.
While widespread rainfall was reported in Wayanad and Palakkad districts, there were no reports of damage. Kannur and Kasaragod continued to receive rains on Thursday.
One person died in a lightning strike in Kasaragod on Wednesday. Three flights from Karipur have been cancelled due to bad weather. Traffic was diverted for a short time following a landslide on the national highway in Malappuram Kakancheri.
The debris was removed from the road and the traffic has been restored now.
