Visakhapatnam: The southwest monsoon, delayed by three days, finally set in over Kerala on Thursday morning and may reach the Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh in two to three days.
Stating this, IMD Amaravati said the onset marks the beginning of the four-month southwest monsoon season (June-September), triggering the sowing season across the state.
The IMD prediction was that the monsoon would reach Kerala on May 26. However, its arrival was delayed due to several climatic factors. The southwest monsoon arrived in the state in 2025 on May 26.
The weather agency forecast that rainfall during the monsoon to be around 90 per cent of the long-period average (LPA) this year. LPA refers to the rainfall recorded in a specific region over a defined period. The LPA of seasonal rainfall over the country, based on data from 1971 to 2020, is 87 cm.
If the monsoon season receives less than 90 per cent of LPA rainfall, IMD classifies this as a deficient rainfall of season.
IMD forecast that Andhra Pradesh will experience mixed weather conditions for two to three days before the monsoon’s onset. Parts of the state may experience hot and humid weather while other parts have thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds and lightning.
The hot weather, coupled with humidity, has been making daily life uncomfortable in parts of the Vizag, Vizianagaram, Srikakulam, Kakinada, East Godavari, West Godavari, Eluru, Konaseema, NTR, Krishna, Guntur and Palnadu districts for the past few days.
IMD said Nandikotkur in Nandyal district recorded 7 cm rainfall between Wednesday morning and Thursday morning, followed by 4 cm rainfall in Srungavarapukota (Vizianagaram), 3 cm of rainfall each in Parvathipuram (Manyam) and Duvvur (Kadapa).
A few parts of the state recorded rainfall between 1 cm and 2 cm during the period.
Meanwhile, heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places over south coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema. Hot and humid weather is likely at isolated places over south coastal AP on June 5. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning is likely at isolated places over coastal AP, Yanam and Rayalaseema.
Gusty winds with speed reaching 40-50 kmph likely at isolated places over coastal AP, Yanam and Rayalaseema on June 5.
