Veteran Malayalam Actor Kaviyoor Ponnamma Passes Away
Thiruvananthapuram: Veteran Malayalam actor Kaviyoor Ponnamma passed away at a private hospital in Kochi on Friday. She was 79.
Diagnosed with stage 4 cancer last May, she was in critical condition and was admitted at the hospital on September 3.
Her mortal remains will be kept at the Municipal Townhall, Kalamassery, from 9 am to 12 noon on Saturday for the public to pay their respects.
The cremation is scheduled to take place at her residence in Aluva at 4 pm.
Ponnamma, who had a theatre background, began her acting career at the age of 14 and appeared in over 1,000 films. She was renowned for portraying the mother of actors like Prem Nazir, Sathyan, Madhu, Soman, Mohanlal and Mammootty. Notably, she portrayed Mohanlal's mother in over 50 films and took on the role of a playback singer in several movies.
Ponnamma, a recipient of four Kerala State Film Awards, also produced the movie 'Meghatheertham.' She was the wife of the late scriptwriter Maniswami and is survived by her daughter Bindhu.
