Migrant Labourers Turn to Ganja as a Getaway from Drudgery

Adilabad: There is no check on labourers from other states who consume ganja and get into brawls with their colleagues. These workers are employed on cotton farms during the picking season, and work in rice mills, ginning and pressing factories, brick kilns and private industries in the erstwhile Adilabad and Karimnagar districts.

A police officer of Ramagundam commissionerate said ganja consumption is an old habit among labourers who worked in brick kilns and rice mills in Ramagundam industrial area.

“These migrated labourers consume ganja in their leisure time for relief. They carry dry ganja for their own consumption and never sell it,” he said.

He said it would be good if the local police keep a close watch on them by visiting work sites frequently.

The exploitation of labour is high in these fields since these labourers are illiterate and work for low wages. In some instances, they are employed as bonded labour and the women are sexually exploited by the employers.

Addressing an awareness programme at the Kotapalli police station, Ramagundam police commissioner M. Srinivasulu appealed to youth not to get addicted to any drug.
