Officials to be Held Responsible for Monsoon-related Deaths

Absence of safety measures to be severely dealt with: Ponnam

Hyderabad: Given that the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is divided into six zones, the state government has directed the corporation to send proposals seeking zone-centric vehicles to carry out food adulteration checks of outlets and units in their respective jurisdictions.

Assuring support to the corporation, the state government has decided to start focusing on slums from next week as part of its monsoon measures, especially on containing vector-borne diseases.

It has also been decided that if works like clearing water stagnation and sanitation are taken up on private lands, the expenditure towards these tasks would be collected from the property owners.

Announcements related to monsoon and future course of action of the GHMC were made by transport minister Ponnam Prabhakar, who is also the in-charge minister for Hyderabad district, after a review meeting with concerned officials at the GHMC head office on Wednesday.

In what is a definite stern decision, it has been decided that officials would be held responsible in case of monsoon-related deaths caused by effective safety measures.

To enhance the safety of people, a safety audit of nalas will be taken up for which 203 nodal officers have been appointed. They will monitor the vulnerable points at nalas.

GHMC said in a press release that dilapidated buildings have been sealed, vacated or demolished while the corporation is building 12 sumps at major water logging points, which will store rainwater, which would later be pumped out to the nearest storm water drain.

The minister appealed to private firms, including realtors, to join hands with GHMC and strengthen the civic body’s lake protection committee to rejuvenate water bodies as a CSR initiative.

In-charge GHMC commissioner Amrapali Kata and others participated in the meeting where the officials were also instructed to make elaborate arrangements for the ensuing Bonalu and Bakrid festivals.
