People warned against ill-effects of tobacco use
Hyderabad: On the eve of the World No Tobacco Day (May 31), many stakeholders, enforcement agencies and doctors cautioned people against the hazardous effects of tobacco.
Many police officials told Deccan Chronicle that the onus of refraining people and children from drugs and tobacco lies with everyone, especially parents and elders. Doctors spoke about the health complications that could also lead to deaths because of tobacco consumption.
“We are taking steps to reduce drug abuse in the city but the mindset of the people should change first and foremost,” said Sadhana Rashmi Peruma, DCP (task force).
Dr M. Rajeev, pulmonologist at Osmania General Hospital, said that life expectancy of people increases by around 50 per cent if one does not consume tobacco.
“On an average out of 100 outpatients, who come to us, almost 50 to 60 per cent are tobacco addicts,” he said.
Meanwhile, a visit around the city revealed that despite a ban, gutkas, vaping devices and e-cigarettes are available easily in the market.
