Chennai:DMK deputy general secretary A Raja wanted a clarification from the Union Government on the basis in which Lok Sabha constituencies would be allotted to the States during delimitation and said that it would be totally unacceptable if the number of seats for other States were increased while that for Tamil Nadu was maintained at the present 39 seats.
Speaking to the media at the party headquarters in Chennai, the former Union Minister said that the doubts were being raised mainly for two reasons, one the BJP had always been against according to the State their rights and two, the party was known for its political dishonesty and could not be believed at all.
Referring to the speech of Union Home Minister Amit Shah at Coimbatore, Raja said that the Hindi address had been translated into English and it used the term pro-rata, which did not enunciate the formula that would be adopted for allocating seats clearly.
If the BJP’s plan of increasing the total number of Lok Sabha constituencies to 848, as announced during the inauguration of the new Parliament building, the number of seats for the State should be increased proportionally.
He recalled the decision of the Union Government to put off the delimitation process in 1971 as the government was giving emphasis to the family planning programme with a view to controlling the population and it was put off again in 2004 for the same reason.
Making it clear that the delimitation should not be based on the population, he said the pro-rata that Amit Shah mentioned should be explained.
