Anna University sexual assault case: Arrested biryani seller remanded
A 37-year-old biryani vendor, Gnanasekaran, was arrested on Wednesday in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a female student inside Anna University’s Guindy campus. He has been remanded to judicial custody for 15 days, police said.
According to the victim, a student at the College of Engineering, Guindy, the assault occurred on December 23, 2024, around 8 p.m. while she was speaking with a male friend behind a campus building. The accused reportedly intimidated them before assaulting her. The student lodged a complaint with the Kotturpuram All Women’s Police Station, prompting the formation of four special teams to investigate.
Police identified Gnanasekaran, a resident of Kottur, using scientific evidence. During his arrest, he sustained injuries while attempting to escape. Officials said the suspect runs a biryani stall on the pavement near the university and confessed to the crime. Investigators are probing whether he was involved in other offenses.
Anna University officials confirmed their cooperation with the police investigation. The Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) has also begun an inquiry. The university stated that CCTV cameras and security measures are in place, and discussions are underway to enhance safety.
The incident has sparked protests and political reactions. Students Federation of India (SFI) and All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) demonstrated outside the campus, demanding stricter action. Opposition leader and AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami criticized the state government, calling the incident a reflection of deteriorating law and order.
Higher Education Minister Govi Chezhiaan refuted the claims, asserting that the government is taking swift action to ensure justice. "The offenders will face stringent punishment, and measures to prevent such incidents will be implemented," he said.
Ruling party allies CPI and CPI(M) condemned the assault, urging stronger action against anti-social elements and improved safety for women in educational institutions. DMK spokesperson A. Saravanan called the incident unfortunate but defended the government's response, emphasizing the need to avoid politicizing the matter.
Investigations continue as police collaborate with university officials to strengthen campus security.
