Chennai doctor held for girlfriend’s death, attempted cover up

Doctor sprayed chemicals on the victim's body, turned on the AC, and fled, leaving the flat locked for three months.

A 34-year-old homeopathy doctor, Samuel Ebenezer Sampath, was arrested by Chennai police on Friday for the alleged murder of his girlfriend, Cynthia, 37, and attempting to cover up the incident. The tragedy occurred nearly three months ago in their rented flat in Thirumullaivayal, where the doctor reportedly caused Cynthia's death following an argument, before fleeing the scene and leaving behind a gruesome cover-up attempt.

According to the police, the incident occurred after a quarrel between Ebenezer and Cynthia over the treatment provided to her father, 78-year-old Samuel Shankar, who had moved in with the couple to undergo dialysis. The dispute escalated, leading to Ebenezer allegedly pushing Cynthia, causing her to fall and sustain severe head injuries. Cynthia later succumbed to her injuries.

Panicking, Ebenezer is said to have sprayed chemicals on Cynthia's body in a desperate attempt to prevent decomposition. He also turned on the air conditioner and fled the scene, leaving the flat locked for nearly three months. During this time, the couple’s neighbors began to notice a foul stench emanating from the apartment. Initially suspecting that the occupants had vacated, the smell eventually led the neighbors to report the matter to the police.

Upon investigating, officers found the bodies of Cynthia and her father in a highly decomposed state. Cynthia's father, Samuel Shankar, was confirmed to have died of natural causes, while Cynthia's death was determined to be the result of a violent fall.

Following the discovery, Samuel Shankar’s relatives filed a missing persons report, prompting the police to investigate. Tracing Ebenezer’s location through Cynthia's phone log, police tracked him down to Kancheepuram. Under the pretense of identifying the bodies, they brought Ebenezer in for questioning. During interrogation, Ebenezer confessed that the argument with Cynthia over her father's treatment led to her death. He admitted to pushing her in a fit of rage, causing the fatal injuries.

The police confirmed that an autopsy revealed Cynthia died from head injuries, while Samuel Shankar passed away due to natural causes. Ebenezer has been arrested and charged with causing his girlfriend's death and attempting to conceal the crime. The case is ongoing, with further investigations being conducted.
