Hyderabad: Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, unveiled four infrastructure projects of the Chennai Port and Kamarajar Port, totally valued at Rs 187 crore, during his two-day visit to Chennai on Monday and renamed the Clive Battery quarters of the Chennai Port after legendary mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujam, who was an employee of Madras Port Trust.
Among the four projects, one was the construction of four EXIM godowns and development of concrete roads around them inside Chennai port, for which the Union Minister laid the foundation stone. The Rs 73.91 crore project aims to meet the growing demand for covered storage areas in the port and ensure safe and secure cargo storage for the port’s EXIM partners.
Sonowal dedicated the 300 m long coastal road inside the Chennai port constructed at a cost of Rs 4 crore and inaugurated shore power supply facility at the Kamarajar Port at a cost of Rs 20.51 crore, which will reduce GHG gas emission of vessels berthed in the port, besides launching the doubling of Southern Railway connectivity, developed at a cost of Rs 88.91 crore in Kamarajar Port.
The Minister also reviewed the progress of both ports and enquired about the key challenges faced by both organizations.
