CM Stalin interacts with Tamil Nadu team conducting relief operations in Wayanad

Stalin who visited the State Emergency Operations Centre in Chennai to acquaint himself of the relief operations carried out in the Cauvery delta region following the release of water from Mettur dam and the condition of 1621 persons living in 26 relief camps in four districts, spoke to Sameeran and wanted to know if his team needed any more support to carry out their operations.

With 1,30,000 cubic feet of water gushing out of the sluices of the Mettur dam at 4 pm on Friday, people living on the banks of the river were sent 1.54 crore messages on their cell phones through the Common Alert Protocol.

Also the government had stationed 470 personnel of the State Disaster Response Force in the districts of Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Dindigul, Mayiladuthurai and Trichy as the South West Monsoon has become active bringing copious rains.

In Nilgiris and Coimbatore districts, two teams of National Disaster Response Force comprising 60 personnel have been stationed to avert any untoward incident due to the heavy rains that had already displaced 596 families that are now taken care of in the relief camps.

Stalin also spoke to people put up in two camps, one in Erode district and the other in Pallipalayam town in Namakkal district, and enquired if they were getting food, water, medicines and other basic amenities. The people thanked the Chief Minister for the facilities and said that they were well taken care of at the camps.

Instructing the officials to be alert at night hours, the Chief Minister gave instructions for the Collectors to visit the camps. Since ‘Aadi Peruku,’ the traditional festival that is celebrated with a visit to banks of the Cauvery falls on Saturday, Stalin told the police and fire service personnel to be watchful at the places where people would congregate in large numbers.

He also spoke to the Collector of Erode, Namakkal, Mayiladuthurai and Cuddalore to understand the ground realities there and told all the officials that they had to ensure that there was not a single loss of life due to the release of water in Cauvery.

As the water level rose in the river, the district administration should make the people on the banks move to safer places and to relief camps, he said. Earlier, on July 31, Chief Secretary Shiv Das Meena spoke to all the collectors in the delta districts and gave them instructions on dealing with the situation arising out of the flooding of Cauvery.
