CM Vijay Wants Quick Punishment for Sex Crimes

The girl had stepped out of her home that evening to attend nature’s call when she was brutally assaulted just 200 meters from her home in the village of Vedanatham.

Chennai: Urging the expedition of investigations into heinous cases of crime against women and children and in the obtaining of punishment for the accused quickly by fling of charge sheet without delay, Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay stressed on the need to take precautionary measures and create awareness on such crimes.

Reviewing the crime situation in the State with officials from the police and social welfare departments, besides the advocate general, at the Secretariat on Monday, Vijay wanted the awarding of maximum punishment for accused in such crimes.

Doing detailed and in-depth investigations against sex crimes and getting stringent punishment for the accused should serve as a deterrent to those planning to commit such heinous crimes, he said.

The Chief Minister welcomed the verdict on the rape-cum-murder of a 12th standard girl in Vilathikulam in Thoothukudi district by a POSCO court that awarded a double death sentence to the accused M Dharma Munishwaran on Monday

Appreciating the verdict being delivered in three months’ time, he said justice was delivered in the case quickly and it should be welcomed because it complemented the efforts taken by the State government to ensure safety of children and women.

In the trial that was completed quickly, 71 witnesses testified prompting the court to award the double death sentence for rape and murder that happened on March 10. The body was discovered the next day and Munishwaran was arrested on March 19.
