DMK to set time frame for Governor to pass Bills

Chennai: The DMK would insist on the framing a code of conduct for the Governors, to be followed as long as the post continued, with a view to safeguarding the dignity of the gubernatorial position, and fixing a time frame for the clearing of Bills passed by the State legislature in the coming session of the Union Budget in Parliament, a meeting of the party’s Members of Parliament (MPs) resolved on Wednesday.

The meeting presided over by Chief Minister and DMK president M K Stalin passed a total of six resolutions and the first one said that the Governor, who was part of the Assembly, had been putting on hold Bills passed in the House, refusing to read out the Governor’s Address, humiliating the Tamil anthem and singing the praises of Hindi and Sanskrit.

While the State government took care of the entire expenses of the Raj Bhavan with the tax money of the people of the State, the Governor would play politics like an opposition party leader, enter into disputes with the government on the appointment of Vice Chancellors of State universities and create universities without Vice Chancellors, the resolution said.

It accused the present incumbent R N Ravi of having interest only in playing anti-people right wing politics without having any faith on the oath that he took as Governor or on the welfare and progress of the people of the State or the traditions and culture of Tamil Nadu and regretted that the hope of the Constitution framers to have Governors who would raise beyond party politics had been shattered.

Apart from being a stumbling block to the development of the State, Ravi had even used the customary Republic Day greetings to derogate the State Government, which no one had hitherto done, and thus denigrated the pride of the nation and the greatness of the State, the resolution said.

The DMK MPs would demand the framing of a Code of Conduct for Governors, as long as the post was there, and fix a time frame of clearing Bills passed the Assembly, which was also a prayer in the case pending before the Supreme Court, the resolution said.

Another resolution thanked Chief Minister M K Stalin for forcing the Union Government to cancel the license given for mining exploration of tungsten in Madurai district with the support of the people and through official and political means.

The MPs wanted, through a resolution, the Union Government and the Prime Minister to highlight the achievement of the Dravidian Model government in announcing that iron was smelted and used in Tamil soil 5370 years ago. It also congratulated Stalin for making the announcement.

Condemning the UGC’s draft regulations that went against the spirit of federalism and the State’s right for education besides being detrimental to high education, the MPs decided to hold an agitation in Delhi demanding withdrawal of the UGC regulations while supporting the protest called by the Students Wing of the DMK on February 6 on the same issue.

While another resolution condemned the Union BJP government for its bid to amend the Wakf Board Act, another one demanded due financial allocation for the State in the Union Budget through new schemes, adequate disaster relief fund and signature projects, pointing out that the earlier Union Budget gave a short shrift to the State by note mentioning its name even once.
