Economic Survey praises Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu contributes for 38 per cent of the footwear production in the country, the economic survey said

Chennai: The Economic Survey of India has lauded Tamil Nadu for being in top of the nation in footwear production, which is poised to increase more with more facilities being planned to be set up in various parts of the State and with many foreign footwear makers gearing up to start their units.

The survey said that Tamil Nadu contributed to making 47 per cent of leather goods in the country and had created over 2 lakh jobs in the non-leather footwear sector. While the State was traditionally known for its leather goods manufacturing units, the present government had ensured that the non-leather footwear industry grew simultaneously.

So, the State contributes for 38 per cent of the footwear production in the country, the survey said, acknowledging the role of Guidance Tamil Nadu in coordinating many of the tie-ups with foreign companies including world renowned Taiwanese shoe makers.

The State government’s Education at the Doorstep (Illam Thedi Kalvi) scheme that had not only increased the reach of education but had also enhanced the interest in learning among the common people had come in for praise by the survey that had seen it as a novel attempt.

Introduced after the Coronavirus pandemic that dealt a heavy blow on children’s education, the government scheme enabled the making up of the loss after it was introduced in the year 2022 in 362 schools in the six districts of Ariyalur, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Salem, Tiruvarur and Villupuram with the help of volunteers, teachers, heads of schools and parents, the survey said.
