Five-Time Champs CSK, Mumbai in Survival Battle

Both teams are not just chasing wins, but also trying to rediscover their identity

CHENNAI: The gap between the top four and the chasing pack is growing wider in IPL Season 19. Teams who have won 10 titles between them Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians now find themselves stuck in the lower half, searching for answers in a format that’s evolving faster.

Whenever these two giants meet, it’s usually billed as the IPL’s El Clasico; a clash rich in history and high stakes. This time, though, the context feels different. It’s less about legacy and more about survival. CSK sit on six points from eight games, while Mumbai trail with four points. Both teams are not just chasing wins, but also trying to rediscover their identity.

CSK might carry a slight edge, having already beaten Mumbai at the Wankhede earlier this season. But questions continue to hover around MS Dhoni, who has spent an unusually long stretch on the bench. CSK batting coach Mike Hussey said Dhoni is "progressing well". “Hopefully he'll be back as soon as possible. I don't know if it's tomorrow or maybe the next match after that,” said Hussey.

Another superstar Rohit Sharma, too, has been sidelined with a hamstring issue and Mumbai are monitoring his progress "on a daily basis". For both sides, captaincy hasn’t escaped scrutiny either. Ruturaj Gaikwad showed signs of form with a half-century, but questions remain about his leadership. Hardik Pandya is under pressure too, both for his decisions on the field and his own inconsistent performances.

Mumbai’s biggest concern, however, is the form of Jasprit Bumrah. Their bowling spearhead has managed just two wickets this season, with numbers that are a stark contrast to his usual standards. His recent outing against Sunrisers Hyderabad, where he conceded 54 runs without a wicket, only deepened the concern, especially after his standout performances in India’s recent T20 World Cup win.

There are still positives to hold on to. Ryan Rickelton has been a bright spot for Mumbai, scoring 260 runs in six games, including a stunning unbeaten 123 that unfortunately came in a losing cause.

For CSK, much will depend on Sanju Samson, who has been in exceptional form this season with two centuries, averaging 50 at a blistering strike rate of 170. With the ball, Anshul Kamboj has emerged as their standout performer, picking up 14 wickets in eight matches.
