Govt to set telecom manufacturing zone

Chennai: The government is in the process of setting up a telecom manufacturing zone that will bring various equipment and component manufacturers under one roof and provide plug-and-play facilities to them. Telecom minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said that India will lead the world in 6G wireless technology.

The ministry is in talks with a few domestic and global telecom equipment manufacturers, OEMs as well as anchor tenants to be part of the telecom manufacturing zone. The government has identified two-three locations for the zone and will finalise on the location as the talks progress.

“We have asked global players like Cisco to partner with us in the zones,” he said while inaugurating Cisco’s facility at Sriperumbudur off Chennai. The government has also constituted six advisory groups for this, he added.

Talking to reporters he also said that the country will lead the world in 6G. “India was behind the world in 4G, it marched along the world in 5G and it will lead the world in 6G,” he said. 5G has been rolled out in 98 per cent of cities, which is the fastest roll-out.

With $39 billion worth of FDI coming into the telecom setor, it is time for the telecom equipment manufacturing sector to go through a revolution, he said.
