Rape-Cum Murder of Child Shakes Up the New Government

Police believe that that girl was sexually assaulted before the body was dumped at a spot about 1.5 km from her house

Chennai: The shocking rape-cum murder of a 10-year-old girl in Coimbatore on Friday shook the conscience of the State with the new government under Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay assuring stringent punishment under the law for those committing such diabolic acts against women and children and leaders cutting across political lines unilaterally condemning it,

Describing it as an unpardonable crime, Vijay said that two persons had been arrested in connection with the incident and he had urged the police to take all necessary steps to expedite the in-depth investigations into it and file the charge sheet at the earliest.

The body of the girl, who was earlier reported as missing since Thursday, was found near the Kannampalayam lake area in Sulur on Friday. The fourth standard student had gone to a grocery shop near her house when she was abducted by Kartik, who was once a tenant in the same compound where the girl’s family lived, in a two-wheeler.

Police believe that that girl was sexually assaulted before the body was dumped at a spot about 1.5 km from her house.

Leader of the opposition in the State Assembly, Udhayanidhi Stalin, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss and AMMK secretary T T V Dinakaran were among the many political party leaders who condemned the dastardly crime.

The people of Sulur, in the neighbourhood of the deceased girl, sat on a protest as the incident sparked public outrage and after the family of the girl refused to accept the body after post mortem.

Taking suo motu cognizance of the abduction, rape and murder of the 10-year-old child, the National Commission of Women sought an Action Taken Report (ATR) from the DGP of the State within seven days.

Coming as a setback to the new State government, the incident has been turned into a topic for debate in social media with some users pointing to the abuse that was heaped on the previous government when such crimes against women came to light.
