Stalin remembers John Marshall
Chennai: Chief Minister M K Stalin looked back with gratitude and thanked John Marshall, a British archeologist who announced on September 20, 1924, the discovery of the Indus Valley civilization and linking it to the Dravidian Stock by taking cognizance of the material culture.
The announcement made exactly 200 years ago on his discovery by the then Director General of the Archeological Survey of India reshaped the history of the Indian subcontinent, Stalin said in his X page and added: Thank you, John Marshall.
‘My government has already announced that the centenary of this historic discovery will be marked by an international conference and the installation of a life size statue of Sir John Marshall in Tamil Nadu,’ he said.
Marshall was responsible for the large-scale archeological excavations that revealed the two cities of Mohenjo Daro and Harappa that formed the Indus Valley Civilisation.
A few years back former IAS officer R Balakrishnan came out with a book titled, ‘Journey of a Civilisation: Indus to Vaigai,’ establishing a common ground between the Indus Valley civilization and the ancient Tamil Sangam period.
