Tamil Nadu: AIADMK Protests Rock Assembly Over Anna University Sexual Assault Case

The Tamil Nadu Assembly winter session witnessed high drama with AIADMK MLAs donning black shirts in protest over the alleged Anna University sexual assault case. The opposition has accused the DMK government of inaction and demanded swift justice, as various political parties continue to corner the ruling government on the issue.

The case involves a second-year Anna University student who was reportedly sexually assaulted on campus in December. The Chennai Police confirmed one arrest, following the victim's complaint that an unidentified man had attacked her while she was with a friend on campus.

The Assembly session, which began with controversy on its first day, saw Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi walk out after refusing to deliver the customary address. His exit followed a disagreement over the playing of the National Anthem, which was replaced by "Tamil Tai Vazhthu," the state anthem.

A statement from Raj Bhavan expressed the Governor's "deep anguish" at what he termed a breach of constitutional duty, accusing the state government of disrespecting the National Anthem. Meanwhile, Congress MP Manickam Tagore criticized the Governor's actions, calling them "completely ridiculous."

The session is set to continue with a Motion of Thanks to the Governor's Address amidst heightened tensions and ongoing protests.
