Tamil Nadu: Chennai port launches new railway goods shed
Chennai: The Chennai Port has constructed a Railway Goods Shed at Jolarpet Railway station byinvesting Rs 6.71 crore under revenue sharing model with Southern Railway with a view to increasing the rail coefficient of container traffic and decongest road traffic converging towards Chennai.
Chennai Port Authority and Indian Railways, in association with Container Corporation (CONCOR), flagged off the inaugural “TVS Go Green Express” container train, which was received at the Rake at Ennore Port Rail Siding on Friday.
A total 29 FEUs (58 TEUs) of M/s TVS Motors bound to African nations with a mix of auto commodities with an average weight of 20 MT were loaded from Jolarpet to KPCA, a press release from Chennai port said.
This event marks a significant step for faster transportation of containers between Chennai Ports and the catchment areas of Northern Tamil Nadu, Hosur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Bangalore, Southern Karnataka regions, and Mysore, the release said.
This multi-modal transportation of Road and Rail is a contribution to the Green Logistics initiatives of Chennai Port Authority and Kamarajar Port Ltd, which would provide a cost effective multi modal logistics option to the trade thereby providing faster logistics with a congestion free entry into ports and improving the port efficiency by reducing the bottlenecks at the port gates.
