Tamil Nadu Government To Move Curative Petition Against Dashwanth’s Acquittal

The judges said no mandamus could be issued in this matter. The additional public prosecutor submitted that the government intends to file a curative petition, the court said and closed the petition.

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government will move a curative petition against the acquittal of Dashwanth, accused in the rape and murder of a 7-year-old girl in Chennai in 2017.

The submission was made when a petition seeking direction to the state government to file a curative petition against the acquittal came up before the vacation bench of Justice G.R. Swaminathan and Justice V. Lakshminarayanan. The judges took note of the State government’s submission and closed the plea.

The judges said no mandamus could be issued in this matter. The additional public prosecutor submitted that the government intends to file a curative petition, the court said and closed the petition.

The girl went missing from her residence on 5 February 2017 and her body was found on February 8 after a frantic search by the parents and police. Dashwanth was arrested in connection with the rape and murder of the girl on the same day.

Though the trial court awarded the death sentence to the accused and the verdict was upheld by the high court in 2018, the Supreme Court in October 2025 acquitted him saying that the prosecution had failed to prove the case.
