Tamil Nadu: Heavy Rain Forecast for Coastal and Delta Districts from Dec 16

Chennai: Coastal and delta districts of Tamil Nadu are bracing for heavy rainfall starting December 16 due to the formation of a new low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai.

Widespread rain will resume after a brief two-day break, on December 16 and the Rainfall intensity is expected to increase, with heavy rain predicted in six districts on December 17 and 18. Authorities have issued Orange alert for Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, and Karaikal for December 17.

The seasonal rainfall has surpassed the average, with Tamil Nadu recording 53.4 cm so far against the usual 44 cm. Five districts have recorded exceptionally high levels of rainfall due to the active Northeast Monsoon.
Historic Rainfall in Thenkasi

According to Tamil Nadu weatherman, Thenkasi and Nellai ghats experienced heavy rains for the second consecutive day, though slightly less intense than the previous day. This marks a historic rainfall event for Thenkasi district in particular. Rains in the region are expected to subside by tonight.
