Tamil Nadu to Retain No-Detention Policy Up to Class 8: Education Minister

Tamil Nadu will uphold its no-detention policy for students up to class 8, reaffirmed School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi on Monday. This decision comes in contrast to the Union government’s recent move to allow the detention of students in classes 5 and 8 if they fail to clear year-end exams.

Describing the Centre’s policy as a setback for children from underprivileged families, the Minister called it "regrettable" and highlighted the potential hurdles it could create for uninterrupted education. "This change by the Union government is a stumbling block for the educational progress of economically disadvantaged students," he said.

Tamil Nadu, which does not follow the National Education Policy (NEP), remains unaffected by this directive except in schools under the Union government’s jurisdiction. The Minister assured that schools in Tamil Nadu would continue with the current no-detention system, ensuring clarity and consistency for students and parents alike.

"There is no room for confusion. Tamil Nadu is committed to preserving the existing policy, which prioritizes the welfare and education of our children," Poyyamozhi emphasized.
