Vijay to crank up party activities after Pongal

Chennai: The Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam is all set to ramp up its activities after Pongal though it had decided to not contest the by-election for the Erode East Assembly constituency on February 5 since the party top brass feels that the organizational structure had been set up properly before facing elections.

Party sources said the founder Vijay president is waiting for fulfilling all his commitments in the film world – his movie, ‘Thalapathy 69,’ is yet to be completed - to launch a tour of the State, covering all the 234 Assembly constituencies by road before taking the actual plunge into politics.

However, work is on in setting up the infrastructure and 100 district secretaries have been identified for the 100 party districts that would be formed with a complete set of office-bearers. The party is likely to have 24 wings that would also have office-bearers to run them independently.

To start with, the party would organize public meetings in the main centres of the State with a view to reach out to the people and explain the party’s political agenda and broad philosophy before starting the campaign to garner votes.

Since Vijay, at the launch of the party at Vikravandi in October, 2024, had openly declared his intention to forge an alliance with other parties and even share the power pie, he would have to identify the right coalition partners quite ahead of the Assembly polls.

Though several parties in Tamil Nadu are looking for an alliance with other parties to defeat the impregnable DMK-led coalition, Vijay is wary of forging ties with other parties now. Among those who are keen on having an alliance with TVK is the AIADMK that had been finding it difficult to get a strong ally after breaking away from the BJP.

So, such crucial decisions on the alliance would be taken only after popularizing the party through meetings and other channels of communication. Vijay and the top brass of the party feel that many loose ends had to be tied up before talking about alliance with any party.

Despite Vijay categorically saying that there could be no tie-up with the DMK and the BJP – he did not name any other party while there was suggestion about the NTK- the BJP does not seem to be averse to face the elections along with the TVK.

Whatever way the political narrative evolves, it will take some time for the TVK to crank up and also decide on its own top office-bearers apart from appointing the 100 district secretaries and head honchos of the 24 wings.
