Telangana: Heavy Rain Causes Water-logging, Traffic Chaos
Hyderabad: Hyderabad city and various parts of Telangana on Thursday experienced significant rainfall causing widespread water-logging and severe traffic disruptions.
According to the Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS) Karimnagar's Edulagattapalli recorded the highest rainfall at 81.0 mm, followed by Pochampalli with 68.0 mm, and Narmetta with 63.3 mm. In the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) area, Hayathnagar witnessed the
highest rainfall of 31.8 mm.
The cumulative average rainfall in Hyderabad's circles varied, with Saroor Nagar recording 14.5 mm and Chandrayangutta showing 14.4 mm. The majority of the city experienced light rainfall, except for Malkajgiri, which saw moderate to very light rainfall.
The heavy downpour led to severe traffic snarls in key areas such as Nampally, Khairatabad, Banjara Hills, Secretariat, and Somajiguda. These locations, notorious for chronic water-logging, saw vehicles moving at a snail's pace. Citizens reported significant slowdowns amid peak hour traffic, worsened by the rains. The bio diversity junction towards Khajaguda lake was particularly affected, reducing five or six lanes of traffic to one due to waterlogging.
The weather forecast for Hyderabad is that there will be generally cloudy skies with light rain or thundershowers likely to occur towards the evening and night of June 28. Maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to hover around 33°C and 24°C, respectively. The city recorded a maximum temperature of 32.1°C and a minimum of 25.4°C on Thursday, with a relative humidity of 90 per cent.
The TGDPS report indicates that rainfall is expected to continue until June 29 with moderate to heavy rainfall likely in various districts. The cumulative rainfall distribution map shows significant rainfall in Karimnagar, Rajanna Sircilla, Jangaon, and surrounding areas, while other districts like Medchal-Malkajgiri, Vikarabad, and Kamareddy experienced lighter rainfall.a
