Telangana: Retired Man Duped of Rs.1.39 Lakh by Cyber Crook
Hyderabad: A cyber fraudster posing as a bank employee managed to acquire One Time Passwords (OTP) from a retired man and got Rs.1,39,895 transferred in his account.
The victim, a 52-year-old retired man, in his complaint with the city cyber crime stated that he holds four credit cards, including one from HDFC bank, the police said.
The victim stated in his complaint that he received a call from a toll free number from the fraudster stating that is a bank officer and asked him to give his OTP number to verify certain transactions, the cops said.
Believing the call to be legitimate, the victim provided the OTPs on three separate occasions and the fraudster in three high-value transactions collected `1,39,895 from the victim's account, police added.
The victim immediately contacted his bank and reported the unauthorised transactions. The bank has assured him that they would investigate the matter. The victim has requested necessary action to be taken.
Based on the victim’s complaint, the cybercrime cops registered a case and are making efforts to identify the fraudster.
