12 BDS Students Suspended For Ragging Juniors

12 final-year dental students were suspended after it was found that they had allegedly ragged first-year BDS students and physically abused an intern: Police

HYDERABAD: Twelve final-year students of Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) were suspended after allegedly ragging first-year students and physically abusing an intern, causing blurred vision in one eye, at the Government Dental College on June 8.

All 12, residents of the men’s hostel of Osmania Medical College, allegedly targeted first-year male BDS students despite repeated warnings. They had earlier broken CCTV cameras on December 31, 2025, and continued abusing juniors.

This group included individuals from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Juniors described them as behaving “like rogues.” Officials said: “To avoid damage to their career and life, many meetings were held with wardens, the principal, and juniors, but they did not listen.”

Dr Sarjeev Singh Yadav, principal and HOD, department of conservative dentistry and endodontics, said: “On Monday, June 15, after repeated warnings for months, we constituted an anti-ragging committee and invited parents, but only six turned up. They explained what their children were doing. Though counselling was conducted many times, they repeatedly ragged the first-year students. Hence, they have been suspended for six months.”

A letter from juniors accessed by Deccan Chronicle stated that around 40 students were staying in the hostel building, and most first-year BDS students were allegedly subjected to harassment. It said: “In the odd hours, seniors call us to bring orders from outside, bring alcohol, cigarettes, fill water in coolers, and bring five-litre water cans. If we fail, they make us do sit-ups and wall chairs, stop us from attending classes, and force us to stay in the hostel to do their work. They also make us bring food and curries from various places irrespective of the time, by walking.”

An intern who had completed BDS and was pursuing internship reportedly tried to resolve the issue but was allegedly beaten by final-year students, suffering an injury affecting vision in his left eye on June 8.

Sultan Bazar inspector G. Naresh said a case had been registered and the 12 students were booked for trespass, physical assault, and criminal intimidation. “Further inquiry will include speaking with witnesses and examining CCTV footage,” he said.

Dr Sarjeev added: “We will take further action after the police inquiry. According to NMC and UGC guidelines, we have suspended them for six months. The seniors have broken many rules. They are not supposed to smoke or drink on the campus premises.”

12 BDS students of Osmania Medical College booked for ragging

Sultan Bazaar police have registered a case of ragging against 12 students of Osmania Medical College following a complaint from Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) final‑year students alleging harassment of first‑year students.

Cases under sections of the Telangana Prohibition of Ragging Act were booked based on a complaint lodged by college principal Dr Sanjeev Singh Yadav. In addition, the principal suspended the students involved for six months.

“We have recorded statements and the case is under investigation,” a police officer said.

Officials noted that while some ragging incidents are coming to light, the true extent of the problem may not be fully reported. Parents of students have demanded that college management take stronger steps to eradicate ragging.
