1,21,422 active workers cancelled from MGNREGS in Telangana in 2023-24

Hyderabad: As many as 1,21,422 active workers were either deleted or cancelled from Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) in Telangana during financial 2023-24 as against 4,15,200 in 2022-23. A whopping 6886532 active workers were deleted or cancelled in 34 States and Union Territories (UTs) in 2023-24 compared to 8617887 in 2022-23.
Union Minister of State for Rural Development Kamlesh Paswan, while replying to a question posed by MP S Venkatesan on removal of workers from MGNREGS, said that the MGNREGS was a demand-driven wage employment scheme and the responsibility of implementation of the scheme was vested with the government of States and UTs concerned.
According to the Minister, the updation and deletion of job cards is a regular exercise conducted by the States and UTs. However, while deleting, removing workers, job cards, the States and UTs have to ensure compliance with provisions of the Act and ensure that no job card of deserving or eligible households is deleted or cancelled.
A total of 86,17,887 and 68,86,532 active workers have been deleted or cancelled during financial year 2022-23 and 2023-24, respectively, for reasons such as fake, duplicate, incorrect job card, family shifted out of Gram Panchayat permanently and village becomes classified as urban etc.
