128 ULBs tenure ends, Telangana appoints special officials

Hyderabad: The government has appointed special officers for 128 urban local bodies (ULBs), excepting the GHMC and the Karimnagar Municipal Corporation, whose tenure ended on Sunday. The list includes 119 municipal councils and nine municipal corporations.

The term of Karimnagar Municipal Corporation, which saw the defection of the BRS Mayor and some corporators, will end on January 28.

The special officers, appointed on orders of the municipal administration and urban development (MA&UD) department, will execute the tasks of the ULB councils.

Telangana has 153 urban local bodies. Of this, 15 are municipal corporations, including the GHMC. While the corporations are bigger and are headed by a mayor, the municipal councils are headed by chairpersons.

An MA&UD official also confirmed that the pre-election process is underway. “We are awaiting the finalisation of the BC Commission’s reservation and instructions from authorities to conduct the election,” he said.

The elections are held through ballot papers. Within 120 days of receiving orders, the official said, the preparations for the polls would be completed.

Narsingi in the west, Boduppal in the east, Badangpet in the south and Jawaharnagar in the north are among the ULBs which will be headed by special officers.
