15.6k Tanks in TG Reach Surplus Levels
Hyderabad: Over 15,600 of Telangana's 34,716 minor irrigation tanks have reached surplus water levels due to continuous heavy rainfall over the past few days. According to official data from the irrigation department, 15,608 minor irrigation tanks have attained surplus levels, indicating that they are filled to or beyond their capacity.
In stark contrast, 2,207 tanks have water levels only up to 25 per cent of their total capacity, while the remaining tanks have varying levels of water storage.
As many as 2,207 tanks have water levels up to 25 per cent of their capacity, 3,745 tanks have 25-50 per cent; capacity, 5,012 tanks 50-75 per cent and 8,144 tanks are filled between 75 and 100 per cent of their capacity. These tanks are valuable in stabilising irrigation needs, especially in the upland regions where other sources of water may be scarce, and contribute to the improvement of groundwater levels.
When there are no sufficient rains, the state government has been working on filling them through a network of canals, linking them to major and medium irrigation projects to maximise the potential of these tanks. This interconnected system ensures that water from larger projects can be distributed efficiently across the state, helping to mitigate the impact of uneven rainfall distribution.
The ongoing heavy rains also pose a risk of overflow and flooding in certain areas, requiring careful monitoring and timely interventions to prevent damage to crops and property. As the rains persist, the state's irrigation department is on high alert, coordinating with local authorities to manage water levels and ensure the safety and well-being of residents in flood-prone areas.
