27 outsourced engineers in GHMC sacked for corruption

Hyderabad: Twenty-seven engineers have been sacked from GHMC reflecting deeper levels of corruption in the GHMC town planning department.

The engineers, who graduated from National Academy of Construction (NAC), were appointed four years ago in the GHMC on an outsourcing basis by the BRS government and their primary duty was to identify the illegal constructions in their respective jurisdiction.

Instead of reporting illegal construction to the section officer, these engineers were allegedly demanding bribes from property owners to hide the violation from higher authorities.

“Irony is that some of these engineers were in touch with local leaders, instead of reporting to their boss in GHMC. They selectively sent information about illegal structures to the corporation's town planning wing,” said a GHMC official.

According to a senior official, GHMC commissioner K. Ilambarith had reliable information that the 27 engineers were reportedly indulging in corrupt activities, indiscipline and had acquired a bad reputation.

“We will also take back all electronic gadgets, SIM cards, among others provided to them earlier for office use,” said a GHMC official. Another official said that they were less afraid of enforcement agencies or crackdown on corrupt officials.
