Hyderabad: In a surprise drive, the Prohibition and Excise department early on Thursday seized 415 Non-Duty Paid Liquor (NDPL) brought from Goa to Hyderabad in three separate flights in violation of norms.
Acting on a tip off, an excise enforcement team led by Assistant Excise Superintendent J Jeevan Kiran intercepted passengers after coming out of Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Shamshabad and checked them thoroughly.
The frisking enabled the team to seize 415 liquor bottles, all worth over Rs. 12 lakh, Kiran told Deccan Chronicle here on Thursday. “We seized three to over 30 liquor bottles from a few passengers for violating norms,” he said, adding that 12 cases were booked against seven people.
The seven persons against whom cases were registered are P Venkatesh, Sriram and G Shravan, all natives of Jagtial, M Ramakrishna of Karimnagar, Ch Rajireddy of Siddpet, Raghu Goud of Saroornagar, K. Harish Yadav of Mancherial.
As per rules, liquor from one State to another State was not supposed to be brought. “The seven persons along with others went to Goa on a business tour. While returning to the city, they were found to be possessing liquor bottles wrapped with bubble packing cover and hidden in suitcases,” Kiran said.
He said a majority of the seven persons were into business and added that reasons behind bringing the liquor bottles to the city from Goa were yet to be known. Excise officials said they were not sure whether the bottles were brought for personal consumption or for selling them to persons known to them. Separate notices would be issued to them in connection with the cases registered against them.
