Five Killed In Mahbubnagar High Speed Crash

According to preliminary information, the bike racing could have caused the accident: Police

HYDERABAD: A high‑speed crash involving a high‑end 1,340‑cc sports bike and a car on the NH‑167 bypass road near Palakonda crossroads in Mahbubnagar claimed the lives of five persons, including two minors and a woman in the four‑wheeler and the duo on the bike. The bike rider was identified as Maqdoom Textiles managing director Abid Moinuddin’s nephew and his friend.

According to police, the accident occurred around 12.30 am on Monday when a car driven by Basheed was returning to Premnagar after attending a family function at UB Garden beside the bypass road. Family members, including women and children, were travelling in the vehicle.

As the car was reportedly taking a U‑turn near Shivaji statue, the bike (HR26 BP 1491) allegedly rammed into the vehicle at high speed from the Christianpally side. The impact was so severe that three occupants of the car namely Sara Begam, Abdul and two‑year‑old Ahmed died on the spot. The bike rider identified as Afzal, and pillion rider Yakub also died instantly.

Several others travelling in the car sustained grievous injuries, including fractures and head injuries, and are undergoing treatment at hospitals.

A source said Afzal was the son of a textile businessman associated with Maqdoom Textiles and had reportedly purchased the bike second‑hand. Investigators are verifying ownership documents, as traffic challans linked to the motorcycle were reportedly issued under the name of one Tushar Agarwal, indicating that ownership transfer may not have been completed.

In a recent challan, the violation was flagged by the Goshamahal traffic police and was charged for not wearing a helmet just on May 2 of this month.

Sources added that Afzal was part of a group of around 12 bikers who had come to attend a function. The other bikers had moved ahead while Afzal remained behind before the fatal collision occurred.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, a grieving family member said the family was just minutes away from reaching home when tragedy struck. “The bike must have been speeding above 150 kmph. Even though the car gave indication while taking the U‑turn, the bike crashed into the left rear door. The people seated at the back suffered fatal injuries,” he said.

The victim added that, “Four adults and four children were packed inside the car, returning happily after a family event which turned fatal within seconds.”

Police registered a case against the deceased bike rider and 11 other bikers who were racing on the road under culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Meanwhile, the postmortem was conducted in Mahbubnagar government hospital and the bodies were handed over to the family members while Afzal and Yakub’s body reached the city late at night.

The family member said they were not in a state to fathom the deadly mishap. He added, “Somebody’s fun took the lives of three members of the same family, including children. We are planning to perform the final rites on Tuesday morning, but we are not able to move an inch to complete our tasks,” he broke down.
