6 Bangladeshis Get Life Sentences for Human Trafficking
HYDERABAD: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) special court in Hyderabad has sentenced six Bangladeshi nationals to life imprisonment in a human trafficking case where women were pushed into prostitution.
The convicted persons Mohd Yousuf Khan, his wife Bithi Begum, Sojib Ruhul Amin Dhali, Mohd Abdul Salam Kounla Justin and Sheela Justin alias Shiuli Khatun were arrested by the NIA in 2019 and were found guilty under various sections of the IPC and Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1986.
The sixth accused, Dhali, was arrested in West Bengal. The rest were nabbed from Telangana between 2019 and 2020. The special court, in its orders on Wednesday, also imposed a fine of `24,000 other than the life sentence, which is generally 14 years.
In the case of default of payment, the accused will face an additional 18 months of simple imprisonment.
The NIA investigation had revealed that the accused had lured Bangladeshi women with the promise of lucrative jobs and decent pay, and trafficked them from Bangladesh into India, where they were forced into prostitution.
Telangana police had registered the original case at Chatrinaka Police Station after rescuing five young women from a house in Kandikal Gate area of Uppuguda, Hyderabad, during an operation in August 2019. The NIA took over the probe and re-registered the case on September 17, 2019.
The agency had filed a chargesheet against four of the accused on March 10, 2020 followed by a supplementary chargesheet against the remaining two in August 2020.
