A tale of two rivers - Krishna brimming, quiet flows Godavari

Hyderabad: The current spell of heavy rain in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are expected to result in further rise in floods of Krishan river but the case with Godavari river, is completely different this year so far.

With several districts of Andhra Pradesh receiving heavy rain that are expected to continue for the next couple of days, flows into Krishna river from its local catchment areas in that state are expected to add to the flows into the river, and consequently into the Srisailam reservoir which is already letting out copious amounts of water to downstream Nagarjunasagar dam in Telangana, where too, authorities are letting out large volumes of water as this reservoir too is brimming currently.

On the other hand, with poor rains in the catchment areas of Godavari river in Maharashtra, and a little better precipitation in the other catchment states of Chattisgarh and a small part of Madhya Pradesh, this river is presenting a completely contrasting picture to that of Krishna.

Most of the flows into the Godavari joining the river just as it leaves Telangana are coming from Pranahita from Chattisgarh with practically no inflows from the river’s primary catchment areas in Maharashtra.
