Addiction to drugs pushes youths towards big crimes

Hyderabad: Addiction to ganja turned youngsters into habitual offenders, eventually leading them to resort to thefts and burglaries to fund their cravings.

Keesara police recently arrested three people who bought ganja by selling the stolen booty and another three consumers at Red Garden Hotel in Rampally Chowrasrta in Rampally. The shared addiction and criminal ties were formed in the jail when the trio were arrested for similar cases and together were on a crime spree, addiction and offences,

Cherukupally Srikanth, 25, Begari Venu Kumar, 25 and Chandragir Sampath, 20, resorted to criminal activities to fund their addiction. Srikanth, an ex-DJ operator, started committing thefts in 2019 to clear his debts while Venu Kumar, an auto driver, fell into the same trap after working as a pantry boy for Google. Their shared addiction ultimately led to their alliance in jail where they plotted more serious crimes.

Rachakonda police along with Keesara police and CCS Malkajgiri officers investigating the NDPS case registered with Keesara police, arrested the trio and three other consumers at Rose Garden, under NDPS Act. The police also seized 1.25 kg of ganja.

Their questioning revealed that they had also committed property offences. Police seized stolen gold and silver ornaments, 1 lakh in cash, all adding up to Rs 9.56 lakh.
