Adilabad: Pest attacks due to water logging in cotton fields
Adilabad: Farmers are worried about growing weeds and the pest attacks caused by water logging in cotton fields due to the incessant rains in many areas of the erstwhile Adilabad district.
Farmers are facing a shortage of agriculture workers and hiring people from bordering Maharashtra. The farmers pay a high wage to remove the weeds and try to clear water logging in the agriculture fields following the heavy rains.
Farmers are busy removing weeds from the cotton, soya and red gram and also clearing the water lagging caused by the floods following the incessant rains. On the other hand, farmers are facing pest attacks on their crops which are inundated in the clogged flood water. This problem is called in Telugu ‘Javuku Pattudu’. It is a common problem faced by many farmers with water stagnation in the agriculture fields.
Cotton plants will not grow as they should have due to water lagging in the fields for longer periods. Some farmers have started spraying pesticides to get rid of pests and weeds. Ramana Reddy from Bela village said farmers worried a lot over water lagging and pests attacking the plants and added that the incessant rains further damaged the standing cotton, soya and red gram crops.
He said it takes many days for water to sink into the soil since there are continuous rains and no high temperatures. However, many farmers are hopeful of getting good crops with high growth among the cotton plants if they overcome the present condition.
