Adivasi leaders revive traditional attire, tattoos at cultural events

At the recent Nagoba Jatra, Kova Laxmi embraced an old Adivasi practice by getting a Trishul tattoo on her right hand.

Adilabad: In a bid to revive Adivasi traditions, minister Seethakka and BRS MLA Kova Laxmi have been wearing traditional Adivasi attire and silver ornaments at cultural events. Their presence in traditional red and green dresses has admired by both Adivasis and non-Adivasis, sparking renewed interest in the community’s fading customs.

At the recent Nagoba Jatra, Kova Laxmi embraced an old Adivasi practice by getting a Trishul tattoo on her right hand. Historically, the Thoti community, known as Pachabotlu Podichevaru, specialised in tattooing Adivasi men and women, with forehead and hand tattoos playing a key role in Gond and Kolam traditions. A distinct tradition required brides to have a Pachabottu (tattooed bindi) on their foreheads to be eligible for marriage. Many elderly women still bear the Chandravanka with Bindi tattoos, symbolising their reverence for the sun and moon.
Seethakka, Kova Laxmi, and Congress leader Atram Suguna were seen in traditional attire at the recent Jangu Bai Jatara and again at the Nagoba Jatra, where they performed rituals. Seethakka stressed the need for Adivasis to embrace their traditions to preserve their unique identity. She noted that some Adivasi women hesitate to wear their cultural attire due to societal criticism but expressed happiness at seeing younger Adivasi girls following her lead at these events.
She acknowledged that wearing traditional dress and silver jewellery daily may not be practical but urged Adivasi women and young girls to showcase their heritage on special occasions.
Historically, Adivasi women wore silver ornaments around their necks, wrists, and hands, but over time, gold jewellery has replaced these traditional pieces. Some elderly women still wear silver jewellery on special occasions, including ornaments made from old coins of ₹1, 50 paise, and 25 paise.
Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG) Kolam Adivasi women were also seen wearing their traditional dresses and jewellery at the festival. The tradition of tattooing remains popular, with Adivasis favoring symbols such as peacocks, tigers, and Lord Shiva. Skilled tattoo artists continue to arrive at Jataras, keeping the ancient practice alive.
